Making a Global Impact: Exploring the Benefits of the Student Engagement and Active Citizenship

On September 10, 2019 during this Tuesday Times Roundtable, I heard about “Making a Global Impact: Exploring the Benefits of the Student Engagement and Active Citizenship”. In this informal discussion, I heard how the audience had different opinions on how a global impact can be made. It was inspiring conversation because I learned that a global impact can be made in different ways by participating in organizations on campus or in community organizations. In the end, a global impact will be positive because the goal is to help the community.

 

 

Inspired to Run: Women's Political Participation

On September 24, 2019 during this Tuesday Times Roundtable, I heard about “Inspired to Run: Women's Political Participation”. In this informal discussion were present guest speakers such as Dr. Nazira Williams, Sabrina Russell, Nancy Mathai, and Jordan Richardson. These guest speakers spoke about their experiences and how they got into political participation. It was an engaged and meaningful discussion because guest speakers spoke about their interesting experience in political participation.

Creating Local Leaders to Achieve Global Goals by the United Nations Association

 

On October 22, 2019 during this Tuesday Times Roundtable, I heard about “Creating Local Leaders to Achieve Global Goals by the United Nations Association- Miami Chapter”. The guest speakers were Flavia Goldenberg and Abdul Rauf. I learned that currently United Nations has focus in 5 gender equality and 13 climate actions. Some of the topics discussed in this Tuesday Times Roundtable were quality education and global sea level rise. It was an interesting discussion because guest speakers spoke with details about these issues that concern the community today.

Understanding Labor Trafficking: Local and Global Perspectives

 

On November 5, 2019 during this Tuesday Times Roundtable, I heard about “Understanding Labor Trafficking: Local and Global Perspectives”. I learned that labor trafficking is a modern-day slavery. At the national level, there is a Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000: an act to combat trafficking in persons, especially into the sex trade, slavery, and involuntary servitude. Also, at the international level, it is Parlermo Protocol of 2000 that prevent and punish trafficking especially children and women. Globally, there are 20.1 million people trapped in forced labor in industries such as agriculture and construction. The victims of labor trafficking suffer anxiety (psychological impact) and chronic pain (physical impact). At the end, labor trafficking is a serious issue globally.
